Fb value or extreme fiber stress in bending. For example: No.2 grade eastern white pine has an E value of 1,100,000 and No.2 hem-fir has an E value of 1,300,000. A material with a higher E value is stiffer. E is a ratio that relates the amount a given load causes a material to deform. E value or modulus of elasticity of the individual elements.will provide a stronger and stiffer floor assembly than 2×8 joists of the same grade and species that are spaced 16-inches o.c. It is important to realize that the way you select and use materials will control costs and performance. Many factors influence how a system responds to loading. For example, Appendix A indicates that one type of clay tile roof system has a live load value of 20 psf and a dead load value of 15 psf. AWC’s Appendix A lists a variety of live and dead load combinations for floors, ceilings and rafters. Simply reference Span Tables for Joists and Rafters published by the American Wood Council (AWC). But for most cases there is a cookbook solution. For a floor system you can find the individual weights of drywall, strapping, floor joists, subfloor, underlayment and carpet in an architectural handbook like Architectural Graphic Standards. To determine the dead load value for a given floor or roof system, the weight of all permanently installed materials in a given component are added together. Unlike stiffness, live loads and dead loads are added together to determine minimum design values for strength. Joists, and rafters must be strong enough not to break when loaded. Strength of a material is obviously important. ![]() Attic floors with limited storage L/240 & 10 psf.Bedrooms and habitable attic floors L/360 & 30 psf.Examples of code-prescribed deflection limits and live load values are: These limits are based on live loads and activities experienced in specific rooms of a house. Typical deflection limits referenced in code books are L/360, L/240 or L/180. Drywall attached to the underside of this system is not expected to crack when the floor joist system deflects 1/3″. For example: a floor joist appropriately selected to span 10 feet with an L/360 limit will deflect no more than 120″/360 = 1/3 inches under maximum design loads. They are expressed as a fraction clear span in inches (L) over a given number. Maximum deflection limits are set by building codes. Only live loads are used to calculate design values for stiffness. In other words, how much a joist or rafter bends under the maximum expected load. ![]() ![]() Stiffness of structural members is limited by maximum allowable deflection. Perhaps the joists were strong enough if they didn’t break! But lack of stiffness leads to costly problems. For example, first-floor ceiling plaster would crack as occupants walked across a second-floor bedroom that was framed with bouncy floor joists. Strength and stiffness are equally important. Beams, studs, joists and rafters act as a structural skeleton and must be strong enough and stiff enough to resist these loads. The house acts as a structural system resisting dead loads (weight of materials), live loads (weights imposed by use and occupancy), like snow loads and wind loads. This article will focus on how simple beams like joists and rafters react to loading. ![]() If, when the loads of the house are combined, the house weighs more than the soil can support – the house will sink until it reaches a point at which the soil can support the load. Remember when your science teacher said: every action has an opposite and equal reaction? Well every building load has an equal “reaction load”. The structural goal of a house is to safely transfer building loads (weights) through the foundation to the supporting soil. A complete analysis of wood’s mechanical properties is complex, but understanding a few basics of lumber strength will allow you to size joists and rafters with the use of span tables. Wood is naturally engineered to serve as a structural material: The stem of a tree is fastened to the earth at its base (foundation), supports the weight of its branches (column) and bends as it is loaded by the wind (cantilever beam). Using span tables to size joists and rafters is a straight-forward process when you understand the structural principles that govern their use. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() World-class Trimming for fast precision editing.100's of Inbuilt Titles, Transitions & Effects. You can even export to a distribution format MPEG-4 (Web, YouTube, and Vimeo) at a maximum resolution of 4k or to DVD and Blu-ray. ![]() If only he and his son could just fl y away … and then he had an idea which was both brilliant and ambitious. Daedalus stared up at the sky and the seagulls that circled overhead. They could not leave by ship all vessels were controlled by King Minos. But who would want to live like that – hiding away hoping they would not be captured? They needed to fi nd a way to leave the island, but how? They could not swim, the nearest land was too far away, and they would never make it. They could possibly survive for months or years without being seen. ![]() The trees and bushes surrounding the beach would provide an ideal sanctuary for the time being. After all, Daedalus had built the labyrinth and knew his way around! Once out of the labyrinth Deadulus and Icarus carefully made their way to the shore of the island and pondered on what to do next. Instead, unknown to the king, they escaped. The King expected that the inventor and his son would be found by the Minotaur and eaten. Now he had the perfect punishment for his enemies! Deciding he had no further use for Daedalus, the King threw him into the labyrinth along with his son Icarus. Anyone who was sent to the labyrinth would be trapped and eventually they would be found by the Minotaur who would eat them alive. Once the Minotaur was in the labyrinth the creature was unable to escape. ![]() Daedalus did as King Minos requested and then, following the King’s instructions, he enticed the Minotaur into the labyrinth by leaving a huge pile of fresh meat in its centre. He enlisted the help of Daedalus, a talented architect, inventor and craftsman, and asked him to build a labyrinth – a maze of passages that would be so complex that it would be virtually impossible for anyone (or anything) to ever fi nd a way out. To die at the hands of the Minotaur would be one of the most terrible deaths imaginable, and King Minos believed that his enemies deserved to meet such a fate. Instead, he constructed a plan to imprison the Minotaur. They begged their ruler, King Minos, to order that the creature be killed, but the King decided against this. The people of the island of Crete were terri fi ed of the Minotaur it loved nothing more than to feast on human fl esh. Daedalus and Icarus On the island of Crete there lived a Minotaur, a ferocious creature that was half man and half bull. When the time came for him and his son to escape, he warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun because if he flew too high, the wax holding together the wings would melt from the heat of the sun and not to fly too low for the spray of water from the sea would weigh down the wings.Understanding Myths and Legends 17 © Karen Moncrieffe and Brilliant Publications 2012 This page may be photocopied for use by the purchasing institution only. ![]() So from feathers of birds, he glued them together with wax to form wings for him and his son. Daedalus worked for King Minos in his palace in Crete, Island of the Minator, a half human and half-bull monster. The story revolves around Daedalus, a skilled craftsman in Athens, and his son Icarus. You might have heard of the tragic story of the fall of Icarus, a Greek myth about the death of a boy who flew too close to the sun despite his father’s warnings. We can learn from these stories and apply them to our lives in this new age. The Ancient Greeks were wise and philosophical thinkers so they had a lot to teach from stories and myths about life that was passed down for millenniums. Jacob Peter Gowy’s The Flight of Icarus (Source Jacob Peter Gowy – Museo del Prado, Public Domain) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’ve never been to a Grateful Dead show before, well, in a nutshell, as an audience member, it’s about just being free. When I had to run to the bathroom, or get a beer, she said it was fine. The adults around her helped look after her. Logan was the youngest person in our general vicinity. And, I told her I’d given a ticket away because someone had once done that for me. I got to explain to Logan all about how I’d once given someone a free ticket, and she said “no way!” How, before shows, Deadheads will often hold up one finger, as if to say “I need a miracle.” It’s implied that they need a hand with a free ticket. We saw folks pedaling their wares: tie-dye shirts, incense, and crystals. When we arrived at the venue, we walked, hand in hand, down Shakedown Street, outside the stadium. Let’s just call it a given that there will never be another Jerry Garcia, and never another Grateful Dead. And this is the only one that’s left me feeling energized like I did when I saw the original members play together many times the kind of energy that makes you feel hopeful. Now, mind you, I totally get that the Dead & Company are not The Grateful Dead, but of all the iterations of that legendary band, from Furthur to RatDog, this one has brought me the most fulfillment and contentment. So Logan and I headed off to see the Dead & Company in the Bay Area, Shoreline Ampitheatre. Since I can’t enroll them in an alternative Deadhead education, this was kind of the next best thing. And, of course, who wouldn’t want that experience for their kids? It’s like something just shifted inside me, and well…at the risk of sounding super cheesy, my heart just kind of opened up to a lot more possibilities. Then, in 1989, at the age of 19, I saw them live, for the first time, in Denver at the McNichols Arena, and my life changed forever. In high school, the Grateful Dead’s anti-war stance became the conduit that lead me into their music. While I very much support those who fight for our freedom, I was and remain torn and conflicted by the Vietnam War, and countless wars like it. But, I started to appreciate how Deadheads, and the band itself, cultivated an anti-war sentiment. My dad wore a tie to work every day and I always had short hair. I’d grown up in a pretty conservative household. When I was in high school, I thought Deadheads lived this kind of dirt bag existence I thought they reeked, were unemployed, protested wars and generally didn’t contribute much to society. I haven’t always been a huge Deadhead, as our fan base is called. Even as I write these, I realize they sound like outdated hippie ideals. It’s also really important to me that my kids always believe in the power of community, tolerance, togetherness, peace, love. Since Logan is a little older, I wanted to “check that box” with her first. During their lifetime, it’s really important to me that my kids see Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, three of the original members of The Grateful Dead. The reasons for me wanting to do this are various. So, when my daughter Logan turned 12 earlier this summer, I made good on a promise that someday, I’d take her to see Dead & Company, an iteration of my, hands-down all-time favorite band, The Grateful Dead. Sometimes tragedy is the only thing that takes life lessons from being purely theoretical to something much more concrete and real. I’m good at sharing platitudes like carpe diem and the like, but my mom’s passing taught me to truly seize the moment in a much more literal sense. But, life got in the way and I never made the dream happen and now it’s too late. Before she passed, I kept telling myself that one day, I’d get her, the kids and my wife Mary together and head down to Los Angeles to see a musical, because that’s what my mom loved best watching musicals. ![]() It was a tremendous loss, to say the very least.
